Claude Code vs Cursor: an agent you direct, or an editor that helps
Claude Code and Cursor solve different problems. One is an agent you hand work to, the other is an editor built around AI. How to choose, and when to use both.
People compare Claude Code and Cursor as if they were two versions of the same thing. They are not. They are built around two different answers to one question: who is doing the work?
The short answer
- Claude Code is an agent you direct. You describe the job, it reads the codebase, makes the changes, runs the tests and reports back. You spend your time on the brief and the review.
- Cursor is an editor with AI built in. You stay in the code. AI completes what you are typing, edits what you select, and can run agent tasks too, but the product is designed around a person at the keyboard.
- Use both if you want to. They are not mutually exclusive, and plenty of people run Claude Code inside Cursor.
How they compare
| Claude Code | Cursor | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An agentic coding tool | An AI code editor, built on VS Code |
| Built around | Delegating work to an agent | A person editing code, with AI helping |
| Where it runs | Terminal, IDE extensions, desktop and web | Its own editor, plus agents |
| Models | Claude models | A choice of models from several providers |
| Customization | Instructions, skills, hooks, subagents, plugins, MCP | Rules, MCP and editor settings |
| Paid through | Claude plans or the API | Cursor plans with included usage |
| Best for | Delegation, long tasks, automation | Hands-on editing and fast iteration |
Both change quickly. Treat this as the shape of each product and check their documentation for the details.
Choose Claude Code if
- You want to hand off whole tasks. Features, refactors, migrations, test suites. Claude Code is built to take a job and carry it through.
- You want it to work your way. Project instructions, reusable skills, hooks that enforce rules and subagents give you a lot of control over how the agent behaves, and that control is shared across a team. I wrote about this in How to build Claude Code skills that actually work.
- You want agents beyond coding. The same tool runs scripts, works with files and connects to other systems through MCP, which makes it a base for automating work that is not code at all.
Choose Cursor if
- You like writing code yourself and want the best possible help while you do it.
- You make lots of small, fast edits where describing the change takes longer than making it.
- You want to switch models freely inside one editor.
The shift underneath the comparison
The real question is not which tool. It is whether your team writes code with AI helping, or directs agents that write the code and reviews what they produce.
The second way is where things are going, because execution keeps getting cheaper and judgment does not. A person directing agents well gets far more done than a person typing faster. It is also a different skill: writing a brief an agent can execute, splitting work between models, and reviewing the actual change rather than the summary. That is what I train teams on in Claude Code and Codex training.

Questions people ask
- Is Claude Code better than Cursor?
- They are built for different ways of working. Claude Code is an agent you hand a task to and direct. Cursor is a code editor with AI throughout it, built for people who want to stay hands on in the code. If you mostly delegate, Claude Code. If you mostly write and edit yourself, Cursor.
- Can you use Claude Code inside Cursor?
- Yes. Cursor is built on VS Code, so you can run Claude Code in its terminal or use the Claude Code extension, and keep Cursor's editing features for the moments you want your hands on the code.
- Which is cheaper, Claude Code or Cursor?
- Both have entry plans at a similar monthly price and higher tiers for heavy use. Claude Code shares limits with your Claude plan, while Cursor includes an amount of model usage and bills beyond it. Your real cost depends on how much agent work you run, so check both pricing pages against your usage.
- Can Cursor use Claude models?
- Yes. Cursor lets you choose between models from several providers, including Claude. The difference between the two products is less about the model and more about the workflow each is built around.
